    Various Therapy https://bleezbub.biz/2024/02/05/various-therapy/ Mon, 05 Feb 2024 07:04:48 +0000 https://bleezbub.biz/?p=595 Guidance and Counselling
Parents are often faced with a situation, where the school informs them that their child is having difficulties coping in the classroom and not performing in the tests. Sometimes, parents themselves see that their child is not performing to his potential though not brought up by the school. They don’t know what the problem with the child is but would like to find out and provide the adequate help. This is when they call Vatsalya Legacy and ask for help. A counselling session is scheduled with the parents.

When parents come for this session they need NOT bring the child, but the following are required:

    • reports of the child: medical and academic
    • From Mainstream Teachers
    • reports of any previous testing
    • answer papers from tests and examinations
    • class work, notebooks

A detailed discussion is held with the parents and any one or more of the following may be recommended at the end of a session

    • An educational assessment
    • A screening test for Dyslexia
    • A referral to other institutions which could help the child as the child’s needs maybe
    • Asked to bring a report from professionals in other fields like : Occupational Therapists, Speech Therapists. Counselors to be able to understand and help the child better
    • Referred for a cognitive assessment to a clinical psychologist
    • Referral to a child psychiatrist to get a diagnosis and treatment for his/her Attention Deficit or any other condition.

What can lack of awareness do?

    • Their self-esteem can be brought down by parents and educator who don’t understand them.
    • The potential of these children could go untapped and they could be sidelined in schools and may ultimately lose interest in studies and may even become school dropouts.

What does Vatsalya Legacy do for awareness?

    • Awareness talks in public platforms like social clubs, corporate gatherings and school gatherings for parents and teachers.
    • Awareness workshops for a longer duration 2-3 hours, covering the various aspects of identification.
    • Programmes on radio and television about this condition.
    • Write-ups in English and Tamil dailies as well as English and Tamil magazines about Dyslexia.
    • Bring about awareness using puppets or a film show.
    • Publications and also disseminate information through the Newsletter and Website.

Training & Workshops https://bleezbub.biz/2024/02/05/training-workshops/ Mon, 05 Feb 2024 06:53:03 +0000 https://bleezbub.biz/?p=590 Along with the increase in awareness of Dyslexia came the need to train people to teach such children. The child needs to be understood holistically with his strengths and needs and given a programme that will help build his skills. The methodology used by a teacher trained to teach children with Dyslexia is different from the way children are taught in regular schools . With this in mind vatsalya legacy has conceptualized different kinds of teacher training.

    Teacher Training

    • Intensive Course for Special Educators
    • For Mainstream Teachers
    • For Parents

    Intensive Training
Vatsalya Legacy offers teacher training courses in the identification and training methodology of children with specific learning disabilities

    • This course consists of both theory modules and hands on practical sessions at vatsalya Learning Centre.
    • It is conducted by experienced faculty in the field.
    • The course offers indigenous methods, which have worked well with children.
    • What can this training be used for?
      • To work as a special educator providing remedial help to children with Dyslexia
      • To work in a school resource centre

    ASSESMENT https://bleezbub.biz/2024/02/05/assesment/ Mon, 05 Feb 2024 06:51:19 +0000 https://bleezbub.biz/?p=588 Vatsalya Legacy offers both :

    • Screening of younger children and a
    • full fledged assessment

    Assessments are of 2 kinds:

    • Those that help in identifying the child’s need and strength areas and to find reasons for poor academic performance.
    • Other assessments are done when a child with a cumulative history reaches a Board exam class and needs to avail of examination concessions that are offered to children with Dyslexia by the various Examination Boards.

Both a screening and assessment are mainly for use in helping the child and to give a starting point for teaching him/her. It is not for giving a label and branding the child. If the school where the child is studying is aware of Dyslexia then some classroom accommodations can be sought as well. If the school has a remedial centre then help can be given within the school itself.

    Screening

    • When the child is very young lacks age appropriate skills there maybe risk factors for having a full blown learning difficulty later.
    • Early identification and intervention is very important.
    • In young children, speech, language, attention, memory for letter and sounds, numbers skills, basic concepts as well as fine motor skills needed for writing are some areas tested.
    • The tests can result in referrals to other therapists and work with a remedial teacher.
    • Sometimes older children who have not acquired the basic skills like reading, writing, and Mathematics and are struggling with the pre-skills are screened as well.
    • A detailed report that gives recommendations of other therapies as well as the need areas to be worked on will be helpful as a starting point for teaching.

    Assessment
Vatsalya Legacy offers an educational assessment for children who seem to be having difficulties and are performing poorly in school and are referred by schools or brought in by parents. This is a longer and more intensive process than screening and is often done with children above 6 years who have some skills. A detailed case history is obtained by meeting the parents in order to get a thorough understanding of the child’s background.

    Areas assessed
Some basic factors observed during assessment are

    • The arousal and sustaining of attention
    • Expressive and receptive language areas and the taking of instruction
    • Mental fatigue
    • Interest etc

    The basic skills of

    ReadingNear Point
    ComprehensionFar Point
    ListeningSubject Comprehension
    SpellingMathematics
    WritingSecond language
    MechanicalFocus to task on hand
ExpressiveVisual Perception, Motor Planning and Execution
    Copying Skills

    Report

    • A detailed report is given of the strength and need areas of the child.
    • Remedial ideas in each of the deficit areas which the special educator or a trained parent can take through.
    • Referrals to other professionals like speech therapists, occupational therapists, doctors and counselors are made based on this report.
    • The child is also recommended remedial intervention if needed and the kind of remediation.
    • a part time remedial help or
    • Intensive remedial help as a pull out from school.

AWARNESS https://bleezbub.biz/2024/02/05/awarness/ Mon, 05 Feb 2024 06:48:00 +0000 https://bleezbub.biz/?p=586 As DIFFERENTIAL NEEDS are hidden disabilities, children with these issues are branded as being “dull”, “lazy”, “disobedient”, “obstinate”. This is because parents as well as teachers are not aware of the condition and this child looks like any other. Bringing about awareness has been a major part of the work at Vatsalya Legacy and one of its main objectives.

Like any other condition “early identification and help” are crucial here too. This would be possible only if parents and teachers are aware of how it manifests and understand why it is important to address the issues.

    It is important that :

    • The general public as well as educationists understand the enormity of the problem: the incidence, (according to world statistics), its symptoms and the importance of providing help.
    • School management help in accommodating such children in their schools.
    • The awareness needs also to be done at the vernacular level so that it reaches everyone.

    What can awareness do?

    • Help in early identification of the child can prevent the children “at risk” from having a full-blown disability later.
    • Can help in understanding and supporting the children having a difficulty both at home and school and understand the child holistically.
    • The child would in turn be reassured and self -confident that he can perform when he is given help rather than think he is stupid.

What can lack of awareness do?

    • Their self-esteem can be brought down by parents and educator who don’t understand them.
    • The potential of these children could go untapped and they could be sidelined in schools and may ultimately lose interest in studies and may even become school dropouts.
